The 2-line WhatsApp message that wakes up β€˜dead’ leads

When silent leads don’t respond to the "just checking in" message anymore, try sending this instead…

The fastest way to warm up a quiet lead is to entice them with insights. High-Net-Worth leads need to move smartly, and if you can be the person to help them do that, well, then the decision becomes way easier.

To wake up a lead who has gone quiet, you need to create a curiosity gap: Something that makes them want to reply because they will benefit.

And in SA, WhatsApp is much faster than an email…

The curiosity gap script

If a lead goes quiet after a discovery call or you sent a proposal, you want to dial up the authority and urgency, but without any friction.

Try a quick WhatsApp message: "Hi [Name], I was looking at a fresh update regarding [Specific Detail, e.g., the local rate pivot/Two-Pot rules] and it reminded me of our last conversation. I had a quick thought on how this affects your plan β€” mind if I send a quick voice note?"

You aren't asking for a 30-minute Zoom call. A 2-minute voice note is an easy "yes," since it shows you’re in their corner even when they aren't paying you yet. It also sets you up as a consulting authority.

Why a voice note?

In South Africa, the voice note is becoming a powerful trust-builder. It’s personal, keeps your professional tone, and the client can listen to it while sitting in traffic.

The 2-minute follow-up

If you get a yes, follow up with a voice note showing the market insight you spotted and how it could benefit them if you move fast.

Here are some examples:

Script 1: The interest rate pivot (cash drag)

"Hi [Name], thanks for getting back to me. The thought I had was: The market is starting to price in the first SARB rate cut sooner than expected. If we leave that [Amount] in the money market fund, your yield is going to drop automatically the moment that happens. I’ve identified a 'Bond-Plus' strategy that locks in the current high yield for the next 12 months regardless of what the Reserve Bank does. It’s a small window, so I wanted to see if you have 10 minutes on Thursday to look at the numbers?"

Script 2: The two-pot/legacy policy review (Using two-pot as a script example)

"Hey [Name], glad we connected. Regarding that old policy: The latest directives on the 'Two-Pot' system mean that your specific legacy fund might have some restrictive withdrawal rules we didn't account for last time. However, there’s a way to restructure it now into a clean-priced option that gives you better access and lower fees. Are you free for a quick 5-minute Zoom on Wednesday morning? I'd like to screen-share exactly what the fee saving looks like."

Industry Roundup

The New Savings Supercycle. Treasury has moved to aggressively incentivise domestic savings. Effective 1 March 2026, the annual TFSA limit rises to R46,000 (up from R36,000), and the maximum tax-deductible retirement contribution jumps to R430,000.

Bracket Creep Relief (Finally). After a three-year freeze, personal income tax brackets and medical tax credits have been fully adjusted for inflation. This stealth tax relief, combined with the withdrawal of the proposed R20bn tax hike, gives immediate disposable income relief for the middle class.

SME VAT Threshold. The 17-Year Update. For the first time since 2009, the compulsory VAT registration threshold has been raised from R1 million to R2.3 million. A massive win for small business owners, allowing them to operate longer without the 15% price hike.

R2 Million Offshore Easy Pass. In a surprise move to ease capital controls, the Single Discretionary Allowance (SDA) has been doubled to R2 million per calendar year. Individual investors can now diversify offshore more rapidly.

Capital Gains Exclusions. The annual CGT exclusion for individuals has been hiked to R50,000, and the primary residence exclusion is moving from R2 million to R3 million.

Did You Know? This week in 1954, the first colour TV sets went on sale in Japan and North America. Most people stuck with black-and-white, though. Colour TV didn’t really take off in the UK before the 1960s, and in SA and Australia, only in the late 1970s.

Till next time,
