How to Spot Cross-Sell Moments in Your CRM

4 Simple signals in data that show you when clients need new advice…

Advisors don’t always need more meetings to find new opportunities; just some better context goes a long way. For example, updates in existing client needs often come as signals in your CRM, KYC and basic client data fields, long before they sit down and tell you about their big life changes.

Here are four common life-stage cycles that appear in most existing client data, creating new opportunities for cross-selling…

1. Marital Status Changes

Updates in a marital status field, added or removed spouses or changes to surname and beneficiary details are data signals indicating marriage or divorce — two of the biggest financial turning points in any client’s life.

Each event reshapes goals, dependents, assets and long-term obligations.

What advice fits: Estate planning updates, adjusting beneficiaries, reviewing income protection, and recalibrating life cover for a joint or newly independent household.

2. New or Updated Dependants

New dependants added to the CRM, new IDs/birth certificates uploaded or milestone ages like 18 or 21 indicate a new child, children reaching adulthood or an elderly parent joining the household — all long-term financial commitments.

What advice fits: Education savings, increasing income protection for breadwinners, planning for care costs, and ensuring long-term goals are properly funded.

3. Employment or Income Changes

New Employer or Job Title fields, updated income figures or benefit changes captured in KYC. These might indicate a job change, a raise or the loss of group benefits. Each carries immediate financial implications, especially if group life or disability cover falls away.

What advice fits: Retirement contribution adjustments, replacing lost group cover, reviewing income protection and using increased earning power to accelerate long-term goals.

4. Residential Address Updates

A new address captured in the CRM, perhaps from one area to another, or one type of housing to another. It could even be an additional address.

These indicate a major new asset and a major new liability (the bond), both of which need protection.

What advice fits: Ensuring building and contents cover is adequate, reviewing life cover to secure the bond, and updating emergency funds for homeownership risks.

By watching these simple fields, you turn ordinary compliance data into opportunities for early, relevant and non-pushy guidance that protects clients through life’s biggest transitions. 🤗

In Case You Missed It…

Industry Roundup

SA Leadership Paradox. While 95% of local CEOs have C-suite experience, only 23% have worked abroad (vs. 37% globally), a deficit that risks limiting innovation and growth ambitions.

Retail to Banking Moves. Pepkor received PA approval to establish a bank, backed by a 23.4% HEPS rise and R60B FinTech throughput.

IFA Consolidation Risk. Rising compliance costs, technology demands and the succession crisis are compelling IFAs toward larger, shared-service practices. Solo advisors might want to develop a strategy for succession planning and tech integration.

New AA-Rated Capacity. Africa Speciality Risks (ASR) launched Syndicate 2454 in Sandton, providing AA-rated Lloyd's capacity for speciality lines like Captives and Construction.

Bullish Equities. A new BofA survey shows SA fund managers are net 100% bearish on cash and record underweight on offshore assets.

Tiger Brands Dividend Surge. Tiger Brands Heps rose 15% and the final ordinary dividend surged nearly 80% (due to lower cover), plus a huge special dividend was declared.

Emigration & Succession Threat. Data shows 80% of young heirs replace their parents’ wealth firm, and emigration rates are high. To retain HNW clients, advisors can look to master cross-border planning using tax-neutral third territories (like Guernsey) and specialist international providers.

Brand-new: emotive client insights

Want deeper insight into clients or a database of potential clients? A very new (launched only this week) tool called ReadingMinds runs AI-driven interviews with your list of potentials, to uncover not just what they think but how they feel on certain topics.

The idea is that most people don’t make purchasing or advice decisions on logic alone; emotions play a big part in our thoughts and actions.

The platform lets you run 10 free interviews per month, so you can test-drive and see the results. Try it here.

Note: This is a newly launched tool, and we can’t vouch for it, so always keep your own safety in mind, make sure you understand the T&C’s and opt for free versions to test them out before making a decision.

Did You Know? In late November 1975, a man named Robert Ledley patented the first CT scanning machine, based on a prototype he’d built with tools from a nearby auto repair shop. He sold it to Pfizer for $11.5 million (inflation-adjusted, that would be over R1 billion today).
